It is difficult to understate the importance and influence of William Shakespeare on the English language. His works are staged and quoted all around the world. Here are five quotes from some of his most famous and beloved plays:
- “All’s well that ends well”
In other words, it doesn’t matter how problematic the situation was as long as everything turns out all right in the end. This quote appears in the text of the comedy “All’s Well That Ends Well” and serves as its title.
- “A plague on both your houses”
This is a curse uttered by Mercutio in the tragedy “Romeo and Juliet”
- “Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio”
This is a dramatic line from “Hamlet” that is said by the titular character
- “Is this a dagger which I see before me? “
It’s one of the most quoted lines from the tragedy “Macbeth”
- ‘We few, we happy few, we band of brothers’
This is a famous line from St. Crispin’s Day speech of King Henry the Vth in William Shakespeare’s historical play “Henry V.”
