Since a lot of communication is done over the Internet, it’s useful to know the meaning of some of the online slang or jargon.
A meme is a piece of media like an image, a short video or some text that’s been modified and made viral. Memes are supposed to be funny, although not all of them are humorous.
Although grammatically incorrect, “epic fail” has been used to describe a big mistake. Being an adjective, epic can’t be used to describe verbs. Therefore, the phrase should be “an epic failure” instead.
Totes is slang for totally. For example: “I totes loved the movie.”
Facepalm – a hand gesture where you put your palm on your face to express how unbelievably obvious somebody’s comment was.
A microinfluencer is actually a person with under 50,000 followers.
Followers – people who subscribe to somebody’s updates on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, or other social network.
If somebody is afraid of missing some new post on social networks and feels the need to check them very often, the individual might be experiencing the so-called FOMO phenomenon or “the fear of missing out.”
Snail mail is slang for letters sent by mail or post, which take much longer to arrive than emails or text messages.
A trending topic is a topic that many Internet surfers are looking up online.
“Argh!” is used to express dramatic disappointment in text or chat messages.
“FAQ” is an acronyms that stands for frequently asked questions.
