Tips for Better Telephone Conversations

Everybody makes some important phone calls at least occasionally. It might be to make a purchase, check the delivery date, or make an appointment. Below, you’ll find a list of useful tips for more effective communication over the phone for English language learners.

  1. Think about what you’re going to say before you make the call.
  2. Use a greeting
  3. Say who’s calling
  4. State the reason for the call
  5. Be prepared to take notes and have a pen and paper on the ready
  6. Try to speak clearly and at a good volume
  7. Make sure to clarify whatever the person on the other end of the phone line has said if you’re not sure
  8. If you’re calling a friend, make some small talk.
  9. Ask for repetition whenever it’s necessary.
  10. Learn commonly used expressions for telephoning in English
